Reverse Engineering

Reverse Engineering is the recovery of a physical object’s geometrical structures with the use of 3D laser scanning technology, to see how it works in order to duplicate or enhance the object. Data is collected by the laser scanning head or the 3D Digitizer, to produce a point cloud, which is used for the creation of 3D CAD surface data.

This technology is used to replicate, enhance or alter an existing object or part, without designing it from scratch with a 3D CAD system, and can reduce product development cycles, times and costs. Another use of Reverse Engineering technology is for ergonomic design. In this case, the part is reverse engineered in order for the design to be built around it.

Reverse engineering is also used by businesses to bring existing physical geometry into digital product development environments, to make a digital 3D record of their own products or to assess competitors’ products. It is used to analyze, for instance, how a product works, what it does, and what components it consists of, estimate costs, etc.

Reverse Engineering has many benefits and applications including:

  • reducing product development cycles
  • capturing complex geometries, no dedicated environment necessary- like a closed room with air condition
  • creating CAD data for further processing, fully integrated and “Mount-it-where-you-make-it” convenience, which subsequently, design and engineering enhancements can be applied to existing designs.
